The desire for knowledge is first stimulated in us when remarkable phenomena attract our attention. For it to continue we must find a deeper sympathetic connection, which will lead us by degree to a deeper acquaintance with the subject.

Susi Smither FGA, GIA JDT

Despite growing up surrounded by her parents' mineral collection, it wasn't until Susi studied for the Diploma in Gemmology at The Gemmologicial Association of Great Britain that she discovered her true passion.

Intoxicated by the mixture of geeky science and aesthetically beautiful natural wonders, Susi also pondered the gem world's impact on the communities it taps into, which she experienced while visiting mining projects in some of the poorest countries in the world. And so her concept of jewellery making with a conscience was born.

Drawing on ten years of hands-on experience combined with jewellery design training at the GIA, Susi's mission for The Rock Hound is to produce cutting-edge pieces that keep our principles of responsible sourcing close to heart. Susi is proud to see that mission take off and gain recognition, as a number of high profile industry awards have demonstrated this year.

Anita Shenoi FGA

Ever since Anita sat next to Susi on the first day of the Gem-A Diploma course, their paths seem to have been destined to intertwine! Like Susi, Anita spent time working in London's Hatton Garden, getting to know the gem trade inside and out. But while Susi was shaping her future as an award-winning jewellery designer, Anita's writing career took her off on a Scandinavian adventure, introducing her to a new gem-inspired passion for researching coloured light. Now back in London, she finds herself sitting next to Susi once again, this time as Head of Special Projects for The Rock Hound! With two gem geeks in the house, there's no end to the mineral madness!
